Importance of MEP in Smart Cities

In recent times, Smart Cities have become a buzz word across India and gaining significant prominence and focus. The government is extremely focused on encouraging cities to transform themselves into Smart Cities so it can bolster the economic growth and enhance the lives of its citizens, and to achieve the noble cause adequate funding is also being offered for the selected smart cities. So before understanding the importance of MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) in Smart cities, it is important to clearly understand what makes a city, a ‘Smart City’.

By definition, “A smart city is developed urban area that creates sustainable economic development and high quality of life by excelling in multiple key areas; economy, mobility, environment, people, living, and government. Excelling in these key areas can be done so through strong human capital, social capital, and/or ICT infrastructure.”

Some of the core infrastructure elements in a Smart City include –

  • Affordable housing, high rise buildings, commercial infrastructure
  • Adequate water supply
  • Assured electricity supply
  • Sanitation
  • Efficient urban mobility and public transport

Upon close observation, it is evident to relate the elements of MEP for each of the core infrastructure elements mentioned above. Mechanical branch comprises of three sub areas i.e. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC).

The implementation of smart city will be a herculean task for government bodies and infrastructure service providers considering the complexity and skilled man power requirements. This challenge of skilled man power requirements is indeed a great career opportunity for students from multiple backgrounds such as Engineers, Diploma holders, ITI etc who can carve an excellent career for themselves.

The typical skills expected from the man power include domain knowledge in Mechanical (HVAC), Electrical and Civil(Plumbing) which involves activities like Planning, Designing, Drafting, and Execution followed by ongoing Maintenance. But the million dollar question is how do students equip themselves with the required skills so they can avail these life transforming job opportunities. Let us look at this in detail.

The following are the components of MEP –

The best thing about MEP is that you can start at a small scale with just desktop/laptop and AutoCAD software. The student can enhance the proficiency in MEP by perfecting his/her AutoCAD skills. You can become a real time MEP Engineer by applying the concepts in your own Mini & Major-project.

The scope of a typical mini project can be –

“Perform load calculations for a multistoried building, based on the output parameters, air distribution and hydronic systems to develop design represented by AutoCAD drawings and other tools/softwares”.

Estimation of Electrical equipments like transformers, DG Sets, Switch Gears, Cables with load calculations for various multistoried building.

Estimation of water and no. of fittings for multi commercial building, calculationg pipe sizes, pump heads and equipment sizing for water supply system. Similarly performing the estimation and calculations for waste system, rain water and fire fighting system

So here are the basic stages of doing the MEP project:

The detail steps of doing the project are as follows:
